TALLINN, ESTONIA – May 2026 – The NARRATE Project, a European initiative dedicated to strengthening the resilience and sustainability of the manufacturing and industrial production ecosystems, successfully concluded its latest General Assembly. The intensive three-day event was held at the Centennial Hotel Tallinn Conference Centre and hosted by consortium partner Policy Lab, bringing together leading industrial, technical, and academic partners from across Europe.
As global supply chains continue to face challenges from geopolitical shifts, resource scarcity, and economic volatility, NARRATE aims to establish Smart Manufacturing Networks (SMNs) capable of autonomously adapting to external threats. This General Assembly marked an essential milestone, showcasing mature prototypes and advanced tools designed to future-proof European industry.
Key updates at the General Assembly:
- The Intelligent Manufacturing Custodian (IMC) & AI Platform: Partners reviewed the full prototype of the IMC, emphasizing seamless tool interfacing and the core functionality of the Federated Data Integration Framework (FDIF) to enable secure, cross-network data sharing.
- Next-Gen Tech Architecture: Sessions highlighted the integration of Digital Twin technology and a unique neurosymbolic AI decision support system (DSS) to enable automated workflows, smart process orchestration, and enhanced privacy protections.
- NARRATE Advances Semantic Smart Digital Twins for Intelligent and Resilient Manufacturing Networks: Within the NARRATE project, significant progress has been achieved in the development of the Smart Digital Twins Blueprint ecosystem for Smart Manufacturing Networks (SMNs). The work advances beyond traditional Digital Twin modelling by introducing a modular semantic architecture based on interoperable Blueprint Views, including Production, Sensor, Event, KPI, Sustainability, Logistics, Warehousing, SLA, and Quality Assurance perspectives. These semantic Digital Twins are implemented using OWL-based ontologies and integrated with real-time monitoring, Complex Event Processing (CEP), analytics, and orchestration workflows to enable intelligent operational decision-making. The developed ecosystem supports end-to-end traceability, semantic interoperability, runtime reasoning, sustainability assessment, and pilot-driven validation across industrial use cases, including the AIDIMME BUDATECH and MEDWOOD pilots. In parallel, metadata-driven APIs, DTPL-based reasoning mechanisms, and integration with the Federated Data Integration Framework (FDIF) are enabling scalable and explainable interoperability across heterogeneous manufacturing systems, paving the way toward resilient, intelligent, and sustainable Smart Manufacturing Networks.
- Proactive Risk & Dependency Management: The consortium evaluated early-warning systems, risk identification tools, and dedicated “Smart Advisors” engineered to alleviate critical import dependencies while identifying strategic export opportunities for European actors.
- Sustainability and Circularity Stress Testing: Presentations detailed algorithmic tools focused on production reconfiguration, end-to-end AI visibility, and circularity stress-testing to ensure networks remain ecologically sustainable under pressure.
With pilot validation plans firmly locked in, the NARRATE consortium moves forward into its next phase: deploying these integrated solutions across real-world manufacturing environments to prove their impact on agility, sustainability, and defense against external vulnerabilities.
