From Horizon Europe Research to Student Innovation: NARRATE Inspires Two Award-Worthy Digital Twin Projects at Egypt University of Informatics

One of NARRATE’s key ambitions is to bridge cutting-edge research with education and industrial innovation. This vision has recently materialized at the Egypt University of Informatics (EUI), where two undergraduate graduation projects, inspired by the concepts and technologies developed within the Horizon Europe NARRATE project, were successfully completed and defended before an international jury.

The projects demonstrate how research outcomes generated within a European collaborative project can directly influence engineering education, empowering students to develop innovative solutions addressing real-world manufacturing challenges.

Research Inspiration Becomes Real Innovation

The two projects were jointly supervised by Dr. Amal Elgammal and Dr. Shereen, with scientific co-supervision from Professor Michael Papazoglou, one of the world’s pioneers in Service-Oriented Computing, Digital Transformation, and Smart Manufacturing, whose research has significantly influenced the vision of the NARRATE project.

Inspired by NARRATE’s work on semantic interoperability, Digital Twins, Artificial Intelligence, and industrial knowledge representation, the student teams developed two operational software platforms:

  • Ontology-Driven Machine Health and Production Efficiency Optimizer, an intelligent neuro-symbolic platform combining machine learning, semantic technologies, ontology reasoning, knowledge graphs, and Large Language Models to support predictive maintenance and production optimization. The talents behind this project are:  Mohamed HaresAbdelkareem Soliman, Seif Wafeek, Renad Soliman, and Malak Montaser.
  • Semantic Digital Twin for Supply Risk Detection and Resolution, an intelligent Digital Twin platform that combines semantic technologies, knowledge graphs, ontology reasoning, and AI to proactively identify supply chain risks, interpret contractual Service Level Agreements, and recommend mitigation strategies for smart manufacturing environments. The talents behind this project are: Matthew Wael , Yousef Osama, Youssef Fares and Mark Hany

Both projects progressed well beyond conceptual designs and resulted in fully functional prototypes demonstrating the practical applicability of advanced semantic technologies within Industry 5.0 scenarios.

International Evaluation by NARRATE Experts

The graduation project defenses were evaluated by an international jury comprising distinguished experts from academia, industry, and the NARRATE consortium, including:

  • Professor Michael Papazoglou, Emeritus Professor and one of the world’s pioneers in Service-Oriented Computing, Digital Transformation, and Smart Manufacturing.
  • Professor Bernd Krämer, Emeritus Professor, FernUniversität in Hagen, Germany.
  • Dr. María Ramírez Gutiérrez, R&D Project Manager, DHL Supply Chain, Spain, with extensive expertise in European research and innovation projects, smart manufacturing, and industrial digital transformation.
  • Dr. Fernando Gigante, Senior Researcher at AIDIMME, Spain, specializing in advanced manufacturing and industrial digitalization.
  • Dr. María José Núñez Ariño, Head of the IT Department at AIDIMME, Spain, with extensive experience in digital technologies and industrial innovation.

The jury highly praised the maturity of the students’ work, the quality of the implemented systems, and their ability to communicate advanced technical concepts with confidence and professionalism.

For the students, presenting their work before internationally renowned experts provided a unique learning experience that strengthened both their technical and professional skills.

Beyond Graduation: Publications and Entrepreneurship

The impact of these projects extends well beyond the graduation defense.

The project outcomes are currently being extended into two scientific journal publications, contributing new research results in semantic Digital Twins and AI-driven manufacturing.

Furthermore, both student teams are now preparing to transform their projects into technology start-ups, illustrating how Horizon Europe research can stimulate innovation and entrepreneurship among the next generation of engineers.
